What to Expect

What to Expect During a Ketamine Infusion Visit

BEFORE

During your first visit, we’ll take the time to have a thoughtful discussion about your medical history, current symptoms, treatment history, and treatment goals. If we both agree, we’ll set up a follow-up appointment to begin the treatment process. This initial visit is also an opportunity for us to talk about the infusion plan, its duration, and scheduling, so that we can ensure you receive the best care possible.

DURING

After registration, the nurse will take the patient’s initial blood pressure, oxygen saturation level, heart rate, and rhythm. The nurse will also start an IV and initiate the Ketamine infusion therapy. It’s important to remember that each patient’s experience may be slightly different, and they may feel dysphoric. Some patients may also experience nausea, but the nurse will promptly provide anti-nausea medication. Throughout the entire infusion, the practitioner will be there to listen, address any questions or concerns, and provide support.

AFTER

It is important to arrange for a ride to and from the facility since driving after the procedure is unsafe. It is also important to note that every patient responds differently, and you may experience lasting effects from the ketamine infusion. Most patients require 30 to 45 minutes to recover and will be observed in the facility for your safety.

Most who receive the infusion for the first time may not experience side effects. However, mild fatigue following the first treatment is not uncommon.

Bandages

Please keep the bandage on for at least 30 minutes after treatment and replace it if there is any bleeding. Once you remove the bandage, it is crucial to maintain the puncture site’s cleanliness and dryness.

Bruising

After the IV is removed, apply pressure for two minutes. In case of bruising, using a cold pack or ice for 10–20 minutes or elevating your arm can be helpful. Bruising is common and may take up to two weeks to fade away.

Hydration

Keep yourself well-hydrated for 48 hours after treatment by drinking plenty of water. Dehydration can result in symptoms such as headaches, nausea, joint pain, and blurred vision, so staying hydrated is crucial.

Exercise

Please refrain from intense physical activity or exercise for at least 24 hours post-treatment. Perspiration can lead to a faster elimination of the infused substances, diminishing their effectiveness.
